Name: Sean Tobin
Ideal Job Location(s): Michigan, Washington D.C.
Areas of Interest: Sean would like to work in campaign research, forecasting and consulting. He’s also open to work involving transparency and accountability. In the long term, he would like to run for office, start his own company, or both!
Academic Training: Sean enrolled in MSU’s MPP program seeking to acquire “the technical and quantitative skills that truly set individuals apart in my particular field,” and he was not disappointed. Sean points to classes on GIS and program evaluation, as well as the MPP’s core of statistical training, as highlights in his academic preparation.
Professional Experience: Sean currently works for Progress Michigan. “My time working as their lone Policy Analyst has been a joyfully enlightening, albeit hardworking, experience,” says Sean. The job has given him the opportunity to do everything from building a website to evaluating State agencies to supporting advocacy campaigns. It’s given him “a feel for how someone with an academic background can augment a diverse team,” he says. “I am very excited to work with them through the upcoming campaign season.”
Sean has also interned with the City of Detroit and with Michigan State Representative Sam Singh. Prior to starting the MPP program, he worked for two years in policy-related jobs in Miami-Dade County, FL. That experience, he says, “taught me how to value and how to advocate for projects that are scientifically sound over those that are not.”
